MADRID, May 7 (SW) - Three days after securing the Spanish championship for the second time in a row, Real Madrid crushed arch rivals FC Barcelona 4-1 at Bernabeu.

Barcelona needed to win to keep a small chance of finishing the season in second place.

But Real captain Raúl opened the score after a Guti assist in the 13th minute, and seven minutes later Arjen Robben scored with the head for the second time this week, after never having done so before.

Gonzalo Higuaín, who scored the winning goal last Sunday, netted Madrid's third just a few minutes after having replaced Robben in the second half.

And in the 78th minute, Madrid were handed a somewhat controversial spotkick with Carles Puyol handling the ball. Ruud van Nistelrooy, another substitute, converted for 4-0.

In the final phase, Barcelona did something back through French striker Thierry Henry, 4-1. Other Catalan attempts were well saved by Casillas.

Barcelona's misery was made even more obvious when Xavi conceded a red card in injury time.

Villarreal are now certain of finishing in second place in La Liga and will be playing in the Champions League next season.

It just gets worse and worse for Barca at the moment. They need some dramatic changes in the club to restore their success.

What a shane that Barcelona's season has ended in such a disappointing manner.

The final score of this last game with Real is not a true reflection of what Barca is all about , because they are capable of playing truly beautiful soccer.

Giorgio May 8th, 2008 11:30

Will Barcelona play any better if Rijkaard is replaced by another coach ? I don't think so. In all fairness, Rijkaard has done a pretty good job.

nikki7 May 8th, 2008 15:51

they will always follow REAL MADRID, because only one club can be the BEST in the WORLD and it is as it's well known Real de Madrid

Firestarter May 9th, 2008 00:07

Barca are a team in crisis, none of the players are playing for their manager, geez, they aint even playing for the shirt. As for Madrid, they win the league, Im delighted for them, but if they had any sort of real challenger up against them, they would not have had things their own way, thats for sure.
