AC Siena twice came from behind to draw 2-2 at FC Internazionale Milano and leave the Nerazzurri just one point clear of AS Roma in Serie A after the capital club defeated Atalanta BC 2-1.

Knowing three points would secure the title regardless of the Giallorossi's result, Roberto Mancini's team were given the perfect start by Patrick Vieira's eleventh-minute header. Massimo Maccarone (31) levelled for the visitors but Inter went into the break in front when 17-year-old Mario Balotelli headed in Vieira's flick-on. But the Stadio Giuseppe Meazza was stunned for a second time when Houssine Kharja (69) equalised, disbelief which was palpable again when Marco Materazzi's spot-kick was saved by Alex Manninger 13 minutes from time.

Goals midway through each half by Christian Panucci and Daniele De Rossi put Roma in a comfortable position against Atalanta before Gianpaolo Bellini (88) ensured a nervy finish at the Stadio Olimpico. Having moved into the final UEFA Champions League qualification place last week, AC Milan's hold on fourth place was short-lived. The Rossoneri were beaten 3-1 at SSC Napoli, to be displaced by an ACF Fiorentina side who won by the same scoreline against relegation threatened Parma FC.

Third from bottom, Parma must now defeat Inter at home next week to stand any chance of preserving their top-flight status and relegating Calcio Catania, who drew 1-1 at Juventus. Meanwhile, Reggina Calcio and Torino FC both picked up three points to ensure salvation for another season – the former overcame second-bottom Empoli FC 2-0 while Torino won 1-0 at AS Livorno Calcio, who are now relegated.

Elsewhere, UC Sampdoria won 2-0 in Sicily against US Città di Palermo to consolidate sixth position, Cagliari Calcio's resurgence continued with a similar scoreline at Udinese Calcio, while Genoa CFC succumbed to a 2-0 home reverse against S.S. Lazio.
