GLASGOW (AFP) - Ten-man Rangers clinched their place in the Scottish Cup quarter-finals with a narrow 1-0 victory over Hibernian at Ibrox on Sunday.
Hibernian's 102-year wait for a Scottish Cup continues after a first half strike from Chris Burke was enough to seal victory in the fifth round replay. Rangers had substitute Nacho Novo sent off in the 79th minute but Hibs could not find a way past the Ibrox defence. Earlier, Celtic scored an injury time equaliser through Dutch striker Jan Vennegoor of Hesselink to draw 1-1 against Aberdeen at Pittodrie in their quarter-final. Aberdeen had started the game brightly and thought they had taken the lead in the third minute but Lee Miller's strike was ruled out for off-side. But it took until the 79th minute for Aberdeen to make the breakthrough with a goal from Dutchman Jeffrey De Visscher before Vennegoor of Hesselink's late goal forced a replay. At Ibrox, Rangers boss Walter Smith, who was sent to the stand by referee Craig Thomson after an altercation with the Hibs bench, said he was disappointed with Hibs' coach Mixu Paatelainen's reaction to Novo's red card. "I just think the reaction of the Hibs bench was a poor one. Throughout the match they were calling for red and yellow cards," said Smith. "I have no argument with the ordering off and I think the referee made the correct decision. After that it left us with a very tense ten minutes but we are delighted to be in the next round." It took a while for both teams to get into their stride but it was Rangers' Steven Whittaker who first tested Hibs keeper Yves Ma-Kalambay with a shot from the edge of the box in the 12th minute which was turned round the post. Hibs came close too with a 30-yard strike from Steven Fletcher in the 22nd minute stinging the hands of Neil Alexander, who was making his first start for the club. In the 27th minute, Dean Shiels skipped past two Rangers players but his shot from the edge of the box was just wide. But it was Rangers who took the lead in the 40th minute with a super strike from winger Chris Burke after good work from Northern Ireland international Steven Davis. Davis cut in from the left and drove his pass across the box to Burke who skipped past his marker to curl the ball into the top left hand corner of the goal. The home fans were incensed when referee Craig Thomson waved away Novo's claims for a penalty in the 74th minute when his cross appeared to be handled by Chris Hogg. But worse was to come for Novo, who had come on for Steven Naismith in the 67th minute, when he was shown a straight red card for a two-footed tackle on Cameroonian Thierry Gathuessi with 79 minutes on the clock. However, Hibs failed to capitalise and Rangers hung on to clinch a place in the quarter-finals with a tie against Partick Thistle. Paatelainen praised Belgian goalkeeper Ma-Kalambay for keeping his side in the game. "He missed our game last week against Celtic but he has come in and done really well," he said. "I felt the players did not relax enough. There were not a lot of good balls to our front men and we were restricted to shots from outside the box." In Saturday's quarter-final matches Queen of the South clinched a place in the semi-finals for the first time since 1950. The First Division side defeated their league rivals Dundee 2-0 with a second half goal from Stephen Dobbie and a sensational strike from 70 yards by Ryan McCann to seal the win in injury time when Dundee goalkeeper Craig Samson had gone forward for a free-kick. Andy Dorman's second-half equaliser secured a replay for St Mirren in their quarter-final tie against St Johnstone at McDiarmid Park. The First Division Saints had taken a deserved first half lead when Liam Craig scored from the penalty spot after Hugh Murray had fouled Goran Stanic. But Dorman's chip over goalkeeper Alan Main tied the scores and means the two sides will have to do it all over again at Love Street. |
