Contrite Adriano promises to deliver goals

SAO PAULO, Brazil (AFP) - Troubled Brazilian striker Adriano swore on Saturday that he would accept his on-loan club Sao Paulo's fining him 40percent of his wages and that he would deliver goals for them.
The 26-year-old was slapped with the heavy punishment for not turning up in the club's official kit for a meeting on Thursday and then turning up nearly half-an-hour late for a training session on Friday. "Adriano accepted his mistakes and the punishment and promised not to misbehave again," the club said in a statement. Adriano, who was loaned out by his Serie A side Inter Milan since December with a view to helping Sao Paulo win the Libertadores Cup, met with the club's president Juvenal Juvencio and told him he would start adding to his meagre total of four goals in 10 matches. Adriano, who has also served a two-match suspension for headbutting an opponent, has seen his career go into freefall since appearing at the 2006 World Cup. He returned to Brazil with the agreement of Inter to recover from alleged weight and drink problems. Inter claimed that the barrel-chested forward looked great last December after a period of rest and were looking forward to welcoming him back but instead he was loaned to Sao Paulo. The striker was an instant hit in his first two seasons at Inter but has fallen by the wayside, suffering injury problems and a loss of form. He has featured just four times in the league this season, scoring only once, and was almost transferred away from the San Siro in the summer. |
