BERN, Jun 13 (SW) - The Netherlands booked their place in the quarter-finals of Euro 2008 with a 4-1 victory over France, clinching first place in Group C.

The Dutch went in front on nine minutes when Dirk Kuyt headed home a pinpoint corner kick by Rafael van der Vaart, right in front of Florent Malouda who never looked to located the incoming ball.

France then took over control of the game and always looked the more likely of the sides to score the next goal, but Edwin van der Sar made several good saves to keep the French out of the net and carry the 1-0 lead into halftime.

Following the introduction of both Robin van Persie and Arjen Robben, the two combined to extend the Dutch lead just shy of the hour mark when Robben crossed in for van Persie to shoot on target, hitting it right at Coupet, but the ball trickled over the line.

Twelve minutes later, Thierry Henry brought France back into the game when he touched home a right-wing cross from Franck Ribéry. But 45 seconds later, Robben made it 3-1 as he was played through at the left-hand post by Wesley Sneijder and smashed into the top corner from a tight angle in front of defender Lilian Thuram.

Wesley Sneijder then hit a brilliant goal in injury time to cap off another great performance.

The French are left on one point from two matches along with Italy, both behind Romania in second with two points.

Holland thrashed loke rag dolls both finalists of the last World Cup. 7 goals in the games against the 1st and the 2nd in the world. Long before this tournament is over it's evident who's the best team in Europe ATM. But for the sake of statistics Holland should go all the way. I'm proud of you boys.

Ajax 72, hold on your horses and remember that famous Latin proverb: Laughfs best he who laughs last! Therefore, do not shoot yourself in the foot, or do not put your shoe in the mouth!

Risking to repeat myself I'd point out once again: I don't care who wins a tournament be it a EC or WC. All I want is to watch beautiful attacking football and nice goals. That's what Holland are offering. I've already had my laughs. So far so good. So my good humour doesn't depend on a certain team winning or losing a tournament.

Ajax 72, very good! You would like to see good attackiing football and nice goals! Well, I believe Italy, today at least, provided you with good attacking footbal and reasonably good goals. Do you think that Holland is the only team to offer you that? If so, why they have not won anything lately? The best football is the winning football. Do not ever forget that!

This is where we differ completely. For me the beauty stands before the utility in anything.

may not be a good thing for Holland to win big so soon............they might have peaked too soon...........plus other teams will be more wary now..........

Honestly, as a fan of Italia I must admit I am not surprised they are in this situation. Historically they have never done well following a WC win. Holland is playing very well right now, but as BesTalentScout said, they may have peaked early and may taper off later, which would be a shame. In this tourney, Portugal is going to be the team to beat.
