Rangers and Hibernian in Scottish Cup stalemate

EDINBURGH (AFP) - Rangers and Hibernian will have to fight it out again after their Scottish Cup fifth round tie - in which Gers goalkeeper Allan McGregor was sent-off - finished goalless on Sunday.
Although the Glasgow team had the better of the first half Hibs looked more likely to book a place in the quarter finals after the half-time break. And Rangers goalkeeper McGregor denied the Edinburgh club a late winner when he appeared to trip Dean Shiels, although he was shown a straight red card by referee Craig Thomson for his trouble. The Ibrox club's manager Walter Smith was satisfied with the draw in the end. He said: "It was a good cup tie and in the early stages of the game I thought we settled quite well and we had one or two opportunities which we couldn't take. "Hibs came back into the match in the second half and it was back and forward all the time. It was a real cup tie so I don't think we can argue with the result. "A draw was a fair result in the end and now we have home advantage for the replay." Hibs' manager Mixu Paatelainen believed his side should have won the match but feels they can still knock Rangers out in the replay. He said: "We should have scored today as we made plenty of chances and it's unfortunate we didn't take them. "It was a good cup tie and not a boring 0-0. Both goalkeepers were excellent and the defences played very well. "Going to Ibrox is never easy but Hibs have shown they can win there in the past and hopefully if we have lady luck on our side this time we can score goals." The Ibrox side had started brightly and Lee McCulloch tested Hibs Belgian goalkeeper Yves Ma-Kalambay in the fourth minute, although his low drive from 20-yards lacked power and was easily saved. Only a superb one-handed stop by Ma-Kalambay kept the scores level in the 14th minute, when Barry Ferguson's first time effort from eight-yards looked to be heading for the corner of the net. Hibs had two great chances in the 40th minute to take the lead against the run of play. First Steven Fletcher nodded the ball into the path of Dean Shiels on the penalty spot but the Northern Ireland striker delayed too long and his eventual shot was deflected past. From the resulting corner taken by John Rankin, recently signed from Inverness Caledonian Thistle, Fletcher's header was cleared off the line by Steven Naismith. Rangers started the second half in the same manner as the first and McCulloch's diving header in the 49th minute forced Ma-Kalambay to save under his crossbar. Visiting goalkeeper McGregor had been a virtual spectator in the game at this stage but in 58th minute he was called into action in dramatic style. Fletcher worked a clever one-two with Brian Kerr on the edge of the box before blasting a powerful volley which was destined for the top corner until McGregor made an acrobatic leap to tip the ball round the post. As the match drew to a close Shiels was sent in on goal and although he managed to beat McGregor to the ball the keeper appeared to trip the Hibs forward on the edge of the box. As the Rangers goalkeeper was the last man referee Thomson showed no hesitation in showing a straight red card to McGregor. Substitute goalkeeper Neil Alexander replaced French-Algerian midfielder - to make his debut after signing from Ipswich - but he was not called into action as Shiels curled the resulting free-kick well over. |
