MADRID (AFP) - English Premier League strugglers Bolton claimed a 0-0 draw at Atletico Madrid for a 1-0 aggregate victory and a place in the UEFA Cup last 16 on Thursday.

Bolton, just three points above the relegation zone, took a 1-0 lead to the Vicente Calderon stadium and frustrated the high-flying Spaniards to set-up a clash with Sporting Lisbon in the next round.

Atletico's best chance fell to Luis Garcia but the ex-Liverpool man fired over the crossbar while the home side, with former Manchester United striker Diego Forlan in their ranks, badly missed suspended Argentine star Sergio Aguero.

Bolton called on grit to deny the glamour of the Spanish with stylish Jose Antonio Reyes and Maxi Rodriguez blunted by the unsung Andy O'Brien and Gary Cahill.
