BREMEN, Germany (AFP) - Brazil midfielder Carlos Alberto, loaned by Werder Bremen to Sao Paulo but who is no longer wanted by the Brazilian first division side, is to remain in his native country next season, the Bundesliga club said Monday.

"A transfer to another Brazilian club could take palce from today, but we haven't yet made a decision. We're going to discuss it with Sao Paulo officials," explained Werder sporting director Klaus Allofs.

Allofs travelled to Brazil after the Sao Paulo club management decided to drop Alberto. "There were various explanations about how this happened," explained Allofs.

The 23-year-old attacking midfielder cost Werder 8.5 million euros, a record for the German club, but played just twice in the Bundesliga after suffering from sleeping problems and clashing with Ivorian teammate Boubacar Sanogo.

Alberto started his career in 2000 with Brazilian top flight side Fluminense before joining Portuguese side Porto in January 2004, winning the Champions League title with the club.
