GRONINGEN, Apr 16 (SW) - Ajax Amsterdam beat FC Groningen 2-1 on Wednesday, and made sure that the Dutch championship won't be decided until next Sunday.

Ajax' match in and against Groningen was initially scheduled for last weekend, but was postponed due to small fires in the stands.

A victory was necessary for Ajax to stay in the race for the championship, but Groningen were decided to make things difficult on their guests.

However, it was Lindgren to put Ajax in the lead after 18 minutes. Groningen reacted well though, and Cahais levelled the score from a set-piece situation just before half time.

And the decider came in the 66th minute, when Uruguayan Luis Suárez - just like Lindgren a former Groningen player - converted a Dennis Rommedahl cross for 1-2.

Groningen had some good chances to equalize in the final phase, but Ajax survived and travel back to Amsterdam with three points in the pocket.

The difference with PSV on the table is only three points, and Ajax have a considerably better goal record.

Next Sunday, PSV will need at least a draw to clinch the championship at Vitesse Arnhem, while Ajax need to hope for a Vitesse win while they beat Heracles Almelo themselves.

Shame, I was kind of hoping for PSV to win it tonight..would have been funny to see a club winning the championship while all its players are sitting in their comfy chairs. :-)

The chamship'll be decided on the last day as it was last year. Do hope this time Ajax will have better luck. Go Ajax go!
