FLORENCE, Italy (AFP) - Danny Koevermans gave PSV Eindhoven a 1-1 draw at Fiorentina in their UEFA Cup quarter-final, first leg clash to give the Dutchmen a vital edge in the push for the semi-finals.
Romanian international striker Adrian Mutu gave the Serie A giants a 56th minute lead before Koevermans levelled seven minutes later. PSV, who put out English Premier League side Tottenham in the last round, also overcame losing their goalkeeper Heurelho Gomes because of injury midway through the second half. Mutu was fortunate to score his fourth goal in the competition this season. Giampaolo Pazzini flicked on a long ball to set the Romanian racing into the penalty area where Gomes could only punch the ball straight at the striker before it slipped into the net. But the Viola's lead lasted only seven minutes. Koevermans unleashed a fierce left-foot drive into the top-left corner having received Ibrahim Afellay's pass from the left. Fiorentina coach Cesare Prandelli praised his opponents. "PSV are a great team who came into this competition via the Champions League and played very well tonight," said Prandelli. "We are fighting for fourth place in Serie A and are in the UEFA Cup quarter-finals. You really cannot ask for more from the team than this." |
