NYON, Switzerland (AFP) - PSV Eindhoven's Ghanaian defender Eric Addo has been suspended for four games by European football's governing body, UEFA, for spitting at an opponent.

The incident occurred during PSV's Champions League 0-0 draw with Turkish side Fenerbahce on Tuesday, video footage of which was reviewed by UEFA's Control and Disciplinary Body.

"During a break in play due to an injury around 25 minutes in (the body) saw an incident involving Addo and Fenerbahce forward Semih Senturk, after which Addo spat in the face of his opponent," it said.

"The referee, Howard Webb, was focusing on the injured player and was unable to see the incident."

UEFA added: "Spitting at an opponent has always been considered as an act of assault by the UEFA disciplinary bodies, who did not accept that Addo was provoked by the Fenerbahce player.

"The Ghanaian will be suspended for the final three matches of the group stage with the remaining one-game suspension to apply either to the first match in the knockout phase or the player's next UEFA club competition fixture."

Addo can lodge an appeal within three days.

Meanwhile, UEFA added that Fenerbahce striker Deivid has been suspended for the next Group G fixture against PSV in Istanbul on November 7 after being sent off in the 65th minute in Eindhoven for serious foul play.

Fenerbahce asked for the red card to be rescinded but "overlooked the fact that there was physical contact between the two players and the tackle was committed in a reckless manner". The decision is final.
