BERLIN (AFP) - The German League Cup could be a thing of the past come the 2008-09 season judging by remarks made by German Football League president Reinhard Rauball on Sunday.

Rauball told Monday's edition of Focus magazine that the clubs were largely in favour of scrapping it.

"The League Cup has never been of great interest," said Rauball.

"The clubs are in favour of taking this measure.

"The clubs could benefit from this by organising lucrative friendly matches or preparing for the season differently."

The League Cup was created in 1997 but the winner is not assured of a place in the UEFA Cup.
