Hamburg move to within one point of Bayern

BERLIN (AFP) - Hamburg continued their impressive early season form to consolidate their third place in the Bundesliga with a 2-0 home win over struggling Rostock on Sunday.
Goals either side of half-time from Dutch captain Rafael van der Vaart and Croatian Ivica Olic, who scored his country's second goal in the Euro 2008 win over England in midweek, were enough to see Hamburg move within one point of leaders Bayern Munich. Hamburg, whose charismatic coach Huub Stevens this week announced he was leaving the club to become manager of PSV Eindhoven next season, are now on 30 points along with Werder Bremen, who are in second place on goal difference. In Sunday's other game, Nuremberg moved up to third from bottom with a 2-0 win over Borussia Dortmund, placed just above the relegation zone. French midfielder Franck Ribery was instrumental as Bayern Munich returned to winning ways at the top of the Bundesliga after Saturday's 2-1 home victory over VfL Wolfsburg. The 24-year-old French international set up striker Miroslav Klose for Bayern's first and scored the second goal himself to settle their fans' nerves after they were humbled 3-1 at VfB Stuttgart a fortnight ago. Germany's Under-21 international Ashkan Dejagah grabbed an equaliser for Wolfsburg, but it was too little too late. Bayern are still a point ahead as Werder Bremen enjoyed a comfortable 2-0 win over bottom side Energie Cottbus. Last season's second division champions Karlsruhe kept up their impressive run of results with a 2-1 win over Hertha Berlin on Friday night which leaves them fourth in the table. |
