SEOUL (AFP) - English Premiership club Bolton reached the final of the Peace Cup on Tuesday with a 2-1 defeat of Spain's Racing Santander while Mexico's Chivas beat Seongnam Ilhwa of the South Korean K-League 1-0.
Bolton striker Nicolas Anelka scored twice in the second half, equalising in the 58th minute, making the most of a fine cross from substitute Ricardo Vaz Te. With keeper Antonio Rodriguez exposed, Anelka's first shot was blocked by defender Luis Fernandez, but the forward banged home the rebound. Six minutes later, the Bolton striker found the net again, with a right foot strike for the winner. Gonzalo Colsa had put Racing ahead in the 25th minute after Bolton defender Gerald Cid failed to clear a Pedro Munitis cross. The Spanish club had more opportunities in the first half. In the third minute, Munitis drew a free kick just outside the box, but Jonathan Valle had his effort blocked twice by the Bolton defensive wall. In the 29th minute, Oscar Serrano sent Manuel Villa in alone with a perfect cross, but Villa's shot was parried by goalkeeper Ian Walker. Valle then set up Munitis inside the box four minutes later, but the Racing skipper's shot sailed over the goal. The win put Bolton, at two wins and a draw, into the final on Saturday. "I'm very pleased with our team's fitness level and team discipline," said Bolton manager Sammy Lee. "Whoever we play (in the final), I am looking forward to playing them." In Gwangyang, on the south coast of the peninsula, Chivas picked up its second win thanks to Sergio Santana's goal in the 83rd minute. Seongnam finished the tournament with two draws and a defeat. On Thursday, Group B leader River Plate faces French side Lyon, and the English Premiership outfit Reading plays the winless Shimizu S-Pulse of Japan. |
