Copa America: History in the Making for Favourites

It has been 14 years since Argentina last won the Copa America, let alone any kind of major senior International silverware.
Tonight they hope to change this. With more footballing superstars than the cast of Ocean's Thirteen, Argentina's football has been quite simply magical and reminiscent of a Brazil of old. Their performances in this year's Copa America have been in no way short of magical. So magnificent has been their execution in the tournament that they brandish the title of "favourites" for tonight's final albeit ahead of the defending Champions Brazil. However, midfield hard man Javier Mascherano believes, "Thinking about who are the favourites isn't a worthwhile issue. The only important thing is what happens on Sunday." Mascherano remained in a bullish mood saying, "No-one has an advantage. We will play with eleven players, and so will they. I think if Brazil has reached the final there is a reason for this. We also have our merits and on Sunday we will show this." Brazilian coach Carlos Dunga also added to media chatter of favourites by saying, "Going by what Argentina has done so far in the tournament they are favourites…" However Dunga was quick to note that, "Nevertheless, when we talk about Brazil versus Argentina, favouritism doesn't exist." Hugely criticized Brazilian forward Wagner Love also backed his coach by saying, "It's a game that will stop the world and there is no favourite. Argentina deserved to be in the Final and so did Brazil. Both sides really want to win." So much is the desire to win the Copa that Argentine midfielder Esteban Cambiasso refuses to even entertain the thought of not winning tonight. Speaking to reporters yesterday, Cambiasso said, " 'It hasn't crossed my mind that Argentina could lose the final. I still haven't thought about it and I hope I don't have to." He also played down the importance of missing Brazilian pair Kaka and Ronaldinho. "To think about the absence of Kaka and Ronaldinho is a lack of respect to the other Brazilian players," he said. "The absence of two doesn't mean that Brazil don't have great potential. We are respectful of our opponents but we want to win this cup and we will do the impossible to take it to our country." Argentine wing-back and fellow Inter Milan team mate Javier Zanetti also explained their burning desire to win. "We have great hopes at this moment. After all these years without winning an important title, we now have the opportunity. Argentina has a chance to make history with this title," added Zanetti. |
