SEOUL (AFP) - Seongnam Ilhwa of South Korea's domestic K-League played to a scoreless draw against Spain's Racing Santander in the Peace Cup on Saturday, while English Premiership club Bolton defeated Mexico's Chivas 2-0.
Despite dominating the ball for most of the game, Seongnam failed to score in front of 20,500 home fans in their home stadium near Seoul. Seongnam's Brazilian forwards Mota and Itamar led the attack. Itamar had the team's first scoring chance in the seventh minute, but his header, set up by midfielder Han Dong-won, went wide right of the net. In the 39th minute, Mota's free kick attempt off his left foot also went right of the target. Then in injury time, it was Itamar who was in alone against the goalkeeper Antonio Rodriguez, but the diving keeper denied another golden opportunity. Seongnam kept up the pace in the second half, as Itamar and Mota took turns in attacking Racing defence and another free kick for Mota in the 69th minute forced Rodriguez to make a diving stop. Nam Gi-Il, who scored the late equalizer against Bolton last Thursday as a substitute, entered the game in the 76th minute, almost scoring. But Rodriguez punched out Nam's kick from just outside the box in injury time. "We wanted to win this one for our home fans, but I am pleased with our performance tonight," said Seongnam manager Kim Hak-beom. "I think we have the momentum to win the next game." Speaking through an interpreter, Racing forward Pedro Munitis said he had been surprised by Seongnam's speed and organisation. Manager Marcelino said his players were not close to being in playing shape, and added Seongnam had been able to control the pace of the game because players were in mid-season form. In Daegu, Bolton picked up their first win at the Peace Cup as Zoltan Harsanyi opened the scoring in the 46th minute, and Kevin Nolan added an insurance maker 30 minutes later. After two games, Bolton sits at the top of Group A with four points, with Chivas trailing at three points. The top team from each of the two groups will meet in the final on July 21. Group B teams will be back in action Monday, as Premiership's Reading takes on French club Lyon in Seoul, and Japan's Shimizu S-Pulse meets Argentina's River Plate in Busan. |
