GLASGOW (AFP) - Scottish Cup holders Hearts crashed out of the competition after a last gasp Scott Wilson goal gave Dunfermline a 1-0 victory at East End Park.
With the game heading for a goalless draw and a replay, the Pars - who are rooted to the bottom of the Scottish Premier League - caused one of the shocks of the fourth round. After knocking Rangers out in the previous round Dunfermline achieved yet another incredible result when centre-half Wilson rose to bullet home a header in the 90th minute. And the defeat will further infuriate fans of the Tynecastle club, who have watched as some of their most influential players have been forced out by Lithuanian owner Vladimir Romanov. With Steven Pressley and Paul Hartley already having been allowed to leave to sign for Celtic, the third player who had publicly criticised Romanov, goalkeeper Craig Gordon, was again left on the bench. Steve Banks was between the sticks for the cup match and it now looks inevitable that Gordon will be allowed to leave the Edinburgh club in the summer. In the other fourth round ties on Saturday First Division side St Johnstone achieved the result of the day with an emphatic 3-0 victory away to Premier League side Falkirk. The Saints had been unfortunate to lose to Hibs in the semi-final of the League Cup after extra-time on Wednesday, but they made amends in style against their higher league opponents. Martin Chalmers and Kevin James put the visitors on the road to the victory in the opening 45 minutes. Peter MacDonald then caused further embarrassment for the Bairns by scoring a third in the second half. Hibernian defeated last season´s Scottish Cup runners-up Gretna 3-1 at Easter Road. Centre-half Rob Jones put the Edinburgh side before the break and they doubled their lead early in the second half when Stephen Fletcher´s shot deflected off the post before rebounding off hapless goalkeeper Greg Sleming and into the net. Moroccan Abdessalam Benjelloun ensure the Easter Road side´s place in the quarter finals with a third, although the First Division leaders scored a consolation through Matthew Berkeley, 10 minutes from time. At Fir Park, Motherwell won 2-0 at home to First Division side Morton. Brian Kerr put the hosts ahead before Australian striker Scott McDonald, who was the subject of a failed 400,000 pound transfer bid from Rangers on Wednesday, completed the scoring by half time. Partick Thistle won a tight game away to Highland League side Deveronvale, with Jimmy Gibson scoring the only side of the match in the first half to put the First Division side through. Russel Duncan scored the only goal of the game as Inverness Caledonian Thistle won 1-0 at home to Dundee United in an all Premier League clash. Queen of the South won 2-0 at home to Cowdenbeath. Stephen Dobie´s first-half penalty gave the hosts the lead in the first half and Jamie Adams, on loan from Kilmarnock, doubled their advantage after the break. |
