MADRID (AFP) - Sergio Garcia scored both of Real Zaragoza´s goals as they continued their good run of form with a 2-1 win at Espanyol.
The victory, in the wake of their 1-0 win in the Spanish Cup at Barcelona on Wednesday, means that Zaragoza stay in sixth place and still in the hunt for a European place next season. Garcia had two good opportunities to open the scoring during the first half but it proved to be third time lucky for him after 54 minutes. The product of the Barcelona youth system connected with a cross from Oscar Gonzalez from 10 metres out, sliding onto the long pass to edge the ball past the on-coming Espanyol goalkeeper Carlos Kameni. Argentine midfielder Andres D´Alessandro could have put Zaragoza further ahead right on the hour but his left foot free kick was just fractionally off target. Espanyol equalised through Luis Garcia after 85 minutes but it took less than two minutes before Garcia restored Zaragoza´s lead, firing home unmarked from in front of goal after a Ewerthon pass. Deportivo La Coruna extended their unbeaten run in 2007 to eight games in both La Liga and Cup games with a 1-0 over Real Mallorca. Fabian Estoyanoff got a penalty one minute into injury time at the end of the first half after Jordi Lopez had manhandled Angel Arizmendi on the edge of the six yard box. Spain´s top three teams all play on Sunday. League leaders Barcelona will be looking to bounce back at Osasuna following their shock defeat to Zaragoza in the Spanish Cup. The defeat was Barcelona´s first in their Nou Camp stadium in any competition this season and prompted questions over the European champions´ ability to win La Liga for the third consecutive year. Barca coach Frank Rijkaard sprung a surprise on Saturday by including Samuel Eto´o in his squad. The Cameroon striker, and the Spanish first division´s leading scorer last season, only returned to full training with Barca on Thursday after being out of action for four months with a right knee injury. "Samuel´s return is good news for us. I have included him for team morale and to play. He won´t complete a full match but he´s been cleared by the doctors and is fit to play a few minutes, half an hour or more," said Rijkaard. Barca´s 2004 and 2005 World Player of the Year Ronaldinho will be missing from the game in Pamplona after struggling to recover from bruises to his right knee and ankle sustained in the loss to Zaragoza. Sevilla are second, one point off the lead, but their fans probably confident that they will beat struggling Real Sociedad after winning all but one of their league games at home so far this season. Real Madrid lie in third place, four points behind their eternal rival Barca, and will be looking to keep up the pressure on the leading pair by beating relegation-threatened Levante on Sunday. Captain Raul Gonzalez, Jose Maria Gutierrez and Emerson have all recovered from recent injuries and were all included in the squad of Real coach Fabio Capello. However, there was no recall for David Beckham despite media speculation that Capello might reverse his decision to never pick the former England captain again. |
