Sevilla survive Tottenham fightback to reach last four

LONDON (AFP) - Sevilla set up an all-Spanish UEFA Cup semi-final against Osasuna as they survived a spirited Spurs fightback to win their quarter-final clash 4-3 on aggregate on Thursday after drawing 2-2 here.
Juande Ramos's side were cruising towards a comfortable second leg victory after Steed Malbranque's own goal and a strike by former Spurs striker Fredi Kanoute put them two goals ahead within eight minutes at White Hart Lane. Jermain Defoe and Aaron Lennon hit back to give Spurs a glimmer of hope after the break, but the hosts, who had Teemu Tainio sent off late on, were unable to complete a great escape as Sevilla got the 2-2 draw that ensured they remain on course to become only the second side to retain the UEFA Cup. Sevilla coach Juande Ramos admitted that Spurs second goal had them slightly on edge, but no more than that. "It was very clear we made things a bit difficult for ourselves after the second goal but we were never in any real danger of losing the match," said Ramos. "The first minutes of the match are always very important and I think my team showed Tottenham we had clear intentions to score and play a good match," added Ramos, whose tactics of open attacking play has apparently alerted Chelsea owner Roman Abramovich should Jose Mourinho leave in the summer. Spurs manager Martin Jol wouldn't concede that the best team had won over the two legs. "I don't know of course Sevilla is a good team but it is easier when you don't give away goals and they certainly rocked us," said the Dutchman. "However if you consider the penalty awarded against us last week we were unlucky but we could have done better today. "In the second-half we won against a team that had rocked us early on and beat them 2-0 but we should have scored a third. "I felt we achieved a lot this year." Spurs England midfielder Jermaine Jenas admitted the first-half disaster had cost them dearly. "We shot ourselves in the foot in the first-half but we showed vcharacter in the second-half and showed what we really are like," said Jenas. "It wasn't nerves by us but sloppy defending. "We definitely missed a chance of going through but when we played them away we conceded an unfair penalty and that could have cost us." It was inevitable that Kanoute, who had also scored in the first leg last week, would play a big role in Spurs' downfall. The Sevilla forward had spent two years with the north London club before moving to Spain in 2005 and his influential display showed exactly what they lost when they let him go. Defeat was a hammer blow for Spurs, who will look back on this season as a campaign that promised much but ultimately delivered nothing. Jol's team had already suffered defeats in the League Cup semi-finals and FA Cup quarter-finals and are now left to try and earn a return to European action through their league position. With so much at stake, Jol decided to gamble that Ledley King would make it through 90 minutes in his first match since December 26 after a series of foot injuries. But the Spaniards had insisted they would come to attack despite their lead and they made the perfect start after just three minutes. Jose Luis Marti swung over an inviting corner and Christian Poulsen glanced a header towards the far post where Malbranque completely mistimed his clearance and diverted the ball into his own net. Spurs were shocked by that set-back but it was nothing compared to their misery in the eighth minute. Kanoute took possession on the right wing and played a one-two with Aleksandr Kerzhakov that took him beyond Spurs' offside trap. Paul Robinson dashed off his line but Kanoute neatly side-stepped him and rolled his shot into the empty net. Manchester United took just 19 minutes to blow away Roma in the Champions League on Tuesday, but Sevilla had managed to surpass even that sensational start. Ramos has constructed one of the most potent attacking teams in Spain this season and they repeatedly carved open the Spurs defence in the first half. Kanoute was pulling the strings and he glided through Tottenham's powder-puff midfield to set up Adriano for a shot he screwed wide. Then Kerzhakov squandered a chance to kill off Spurs when he shot straight at Robinson after another flowing move. Spurs didn't manage a serious threat until the 40th minute when Dimitar Berbatov was just off-target. That near-miss sparked Spurs into life and Berbatov went even closer on the stroke of half-time with a low shot that struck the far post. Sevilla were increasingly content to sit on their lead in the second half and they were punished as Spurs fought back in stunning style. When Kanoute headed out Jenas's free-kick, Robbie Keane hit a shot back across the penalty area for Defoe to score with his first touch in the 65th minute. Spurs equalised two minutes later when Keane deflected Andreas Hinkel's header towards Lennon and the winger squeezed his shot under David Cobeno. |
