VIGO, May 3 (SW) - FC Barcelona have won their 18th Spanish league title, beating Celta de Vigo 0-1 while Valencia had already given up as result of a defeat by Mallorca.
Frank Rijkaard took the entire squad to the Galician town of Vigo, so all players could join the possible celebrations. Barcelona staff members and fans spent the entire first half listening to portable radios, as the outcome of Valencia's match with Mallorca could decide the championship as well. Just after the half time whistle, it became clear that Valencia had indeed lost to Mallorca, and the pressure was taken off Barcelona's shoulders for the remaining 45 minutes. Ten minutes into the second half, Samuel Eto'o scored for what would be the only goal of the match. Celta would have some chances in the final phase, but the crossbar and goalkeeper Victor Valdés kept the Galicians away from scoring the equalizer. With 76 points from 34 matches, it is impossible for other clubs to catch up with the 'Blaugrana', who uptil now managed to win 23 of this season's league matches. Barcelona secure their 18th national championship title. The first was won in 1929, which was also the first edition of the national league. After this, the Catalans needed 16 years to win their second trophy, but from then on, Barcelona would regularly appear in first position at the end of the season. The club had its best time in the early nineties, winning four league titles in a row from 1991 to 1994. This was under the reign of Johan Cruyff, who also took the side to their first (and uptil now only) European victory. Louis van Gaal took the club to another two Primera División titles in 1998 and 1999, and current manager Frank Rijkaard led the team to their seventeenth victory last season. |
