SEVILLA/PAMPLONA, May 16 (SW) - Real Madrid lost to Sevilla, but maintain their second place in the Liga as Valencia suffered a defeat at Osasuna. The Basques finish fourth, just ahead of Sevilla.
Sevilla - Real Madrid 4-3 The first half was particularly spectacular in Sevilla. A free kick from David Beckham put Madrid in the lead after 16 minutes, and the English international added a second ten minutes later, controlling a long pass from Roberto Carlos before putting the ball past Palop. But Sevilla refused to give up, and Jesus Navas got one back with a distance strike only two minutes later. Another two had passed when Javier Saviola levelled the score from the edge of the penalty area, after a Casillas mistake. And the Argentinian added another four minutes later, to put Sevilla in the lead, and this would be enough to qualify for the Champions League if the match between Osasuna and Valencia ended with a scoreless draw as result. Brazilian Luis Fabiano then netted the fourth goal for Sevilla, just before the half time whistle. After half time, Sevilla fans were somewhat silenced by the news from Pamplona (read below), and Zidane got one back for Madrid in the 72nd minute. Osasuna - Valencia 2-1 After a goalless first half in Basque Country, Valencia could not hold on any longer and Savo Milosevic broke the deadlock with a header past Cañizares. And only three minutes later, David López doubled Osasuna's lead, and the Pamplona based side was now closer to the Champions League than ever. Valencia spent the rest of the second half attacking but was not rewarded until the 93rd minute, when striker David Villa set the final score to 2-1. Madrid finish the season in second place with 70 points, one more than Valencia. Osasuna and Sevilla both have 68 points, but Osasuna have a better head-to-head record and Sevilla go to the UEFA Cup. |
