HAMBURG, May 13 (SW) - A 72nd-minute goal from Miroslav Klose earned Werder Bremen a victory over Hamburger SV, which is enough to clinch the second place on the final matchday.
Hamburger SV - Werder Bremen 1-2 Hamburg only needed a draw to maintain their second place, which gives access to the group phase of the Champions League while the numbers three have to appear in the third preliminary round. The score was opened by Werder's Ivan Klasnic in the 27th minute, but Sergej Barbarez levelled for the hosts in the 59th minute. With 18 minutes to go however, it was international striker Miroslav Klose to set the score to 1-2. Werder finish the season with 70 points, five less than champions Bayern Munich, but two more than Hamburg. Bayern Munich - Borussia Dortmund 3-3 Bayern Munich had little to play for against Borussia Dortmund, although it was the last match for former international midfielder Jens Jeremies, who retires at the age of 32. Czech striker Jan Koller opened the score in the second minute, but Roy Makaay equalized for Bayern, four minutes later. Bastian Schweinsteiger and Michael Ballack then added another two for the Bavarians in the 48th and 50th minute, but Dortmund would get a point thanks to goals from Phillip Degen in the 64th minute and Jan Koller in the 76th. Schalke 04 - VfB Stuttgart 3-2 Schalke end their season with a 3-2 win over Stuttgart, with goals from Ebbe Sand, Marcelo Jose Bordon and Tomasz Waldoch. Thomas Hitzlsperger and Cacau scored for Stuttgart. Hannover 96 - Bayer Leverkusen 2-2 Hannover and Bayer held each other to a 2-2 draw. Per Mertesacker opened the score for Hannover but had his goal cancelled out by Simon Rolfes. Bulgarian Dimitar Berbatov, for whom this match may have been his last at Leverkusen, then scored for 1-2 in the 39th minute, but Chavdar Yankov netted for 2-2 in the 52nd. Nurnberg - Hertha BSC 2-1 Nurnberg achieved a 2-1 win over Hertha with goals from Robert Vittek and Ivan Saenko, while Hertha's only goal came from Pal Dardai. Jan Polak of Nurnberg and Josip Simunic of Hertha were red-carded. Eintracht Frankfurt - Borussia M'gladbach 0-2 Borussia Mönchengladbach earned three points with a 0-2 win at Eintracht. Oliver Neuville broke the deadlock after 56 minutes, and Nando Rafael added a second in stoppage time. Duisburg - Mainz 0-0 No goals were scored at Duisburg versus Mainz. Duisburg finish in last position and will be spending next season in the 2.Bundesliga, while Mainz end in eleventh place. Cologne - Arminia Bielefeld 4-2 Cologne will have to leave the top flight as well, finishing in 17th place, but did beat Arminia on the final day. Lukas Podolski (2), Matthias Scherz and Patrick Helmes were responsible for Cologne's goals, while David Kobylik and Radomir Dalovic scored for Bielefeld. Wolfsburg - Kaiserslautern 2-2 Kaiserslautern needed a win to surpass Wolfsburg and move into 15th place, but a 2-2 draw has the visitors relegated to the 2.Bundesliga. Halil Altintop opened the score after 20 minutes, but things were turned around by Cedric Makiadi in the 66th minute and Diego Fernando Klimowicz in the 69th. Marcel Ziemer did equalize in the 86th, but this was insufficient. |
