Netherlands: Arveladze helps AZ past Feyenoord

ALKMAAR, Mar 19 (SW) - AZ Alkmaar defeated Feyenoord on Sunday and move into second place in the Dutch Eredivisie. PSV Eindhoven had earlier earned three points against NEC and now have a nine-points lead.
Friday: NAC Breda - Vitesse 2-2 NAC hosted Vitesse on Friday and conceded a goal from Knopper in the fifth minute. Things were turned around however by goals from Leonardo in the 12th and 47th minutes. The visiting side managed to get a point however, as Remco van der Schaaf levelled in the 92nd minute. Saturday: PSV Eindhoven - NEC Nijmegen 1-0 League leaders PSV Eindhoven were having difficulties getting through NEC's defense but did eventually do so. The only and therefore winning goal came from Jefferson Farfán in the 78th minute. SC Heerenveen - RKC Waalwijk 2-1 RKC took the lead through Van Dijk in the 36th minute but the hosts equalized through Pranjic in the 68th. Former PSV and Mallorca striker Arnold Bruggink added a deciding goal for Heerenveen in the 89th minute. ADO Den Haag - Roda JC 1-1 Roda JC had Sonko breaking the deadlock after 25 minutes, but the home side equalized through Rankovic, eight minutes after the hour mark. Heracles - Willem II 1-0 Only seven minutes had been played when Mika Nurmela put Heracles in the lead, and Willem II failed to use the remaining time to equalize. The hosts did have a player sent off: Frank van der Struijk in the 91st minute. Sunday: AZ Alkmaar - Feyenoord 1-0 The top clash of the week was played at the Alkmaarderhout, where AZ hosted Feyenoord and won 1-0 thanks to a goal from Georgian striker Shota Arveladze in the 58th minute. AZ are now second with 64 points, one more than Feyenoord. FC Groningen - Ajax 3-2 Yevgeni Levchenko converted a penalty to put Groningen in the lead after 13 minutes, but Ajax striker Klaas Jan Huntelaar levelled four minutes later. Erik Nevland then restored Groningen's lead, just before the break, but this time it was Thomas Vermaelen to equalize in the 68th. The fans at Euroborg stadium would get a reason to celebrate however, as Antoine van der Linden got a winning goal in the 71st minute. Ajas goalscorer Vermaelen received a second yellow card in the 78th minute and had to leave the pitch. Sparta - FC Utrecht 0-1 FC Utrecht visited Sparta at 'het Kasteel' stadium in Rotterdam, and walked away with three valuable points thanks to a single goal from Dave van den Bergh in the 26th minute. RBC Roosendaal - FC Twente 1-1 Less than six minutes had been played when a goal from Ebrima Ebou Sillah opened the score in RBC's favour. But the guests did not give up and had Kennedy Bakircioglü equalizing in the 84th minute. |
