READING, Jan 17 (SW) - It was possibly a Premiership audition for Championship leaders Reading as they came from two goals back to defeat West Bromwich Albion in extra time in their third-round FA Cup replay at the Madejski Stadium thanks to a Leroy Lita hat trick.
Reading - West Bromwich Albion 3-2 AET Bound for the Premiership next season, Reading pulled off a great escape, although the Baggies made them fight for a victory. Richard Chaplow put West Brom into the lead just nine minutes in with a nice effort and he himself doubled their lead in the 32nd minute, putting in after a volley by Nathan Ellington was saved by Graham Stack. The Lita show began five minutes into the second half when he turned in a cross by John Oster and he pulled the Royals level 15 minutes later after being set up by Steve Sidwell. Reading manager Steve Coppell had fielded a weakened side ahead of their Friday match in the Championship, but three minutes into extra time, that weakened side had a lead when Lita fired home after James Harper mishit his attempt. Birmingham City - Torquay United 2-0 The side sitting third from the bottom of League Two held struggling Birmingham in check for 150 minutes, but the Blues finally prevailed in their third-round replay. Midfielder Jiri Jarosik finally broke the deadlock in the tie just past the the hour mark, stabbing the ball into the net after a failed clearance by Torquay and Mikael Forssell put the match out of reach with nine minutes to play by firing home from a Jermaine Pennant header. The reward for their victory may not be one they wanted - an away trip to dangerous Reading in the fourth round. Leeds United - Wigan Athletic 3-3 AET Wigan win 4-2 on penalties It was an amazing game at Elland Road, but the Premiership side edged past the Championship play-off contenders after some miscues in the penalty shoot-out. Andreas Johansson gave Wigan a 23rd-minute lead, putting in a rebound after his shot hit the past, but Northern Ireland international David Healy equalized five minutes before half-time, poking in after Rob Hulse's shot was blocked on the line. Jason Roberts' terrific volley retook the lead for the Latics in the 50th minute, but Healy again leveled for the Whites. After Matt Jackson was whistle for a handball in the area, Healy made no mistake from the spot and the game went to extra time. Roberts got his second goal of the match on 103 minutes with a header of Graham Kavanagh's chip, but Gary Kelly's first goal in nearly three years with four minutes to go in extra time sent the match to penalties. Healy sent the opener over the bar and the teams then traded goals until Wigan lead 3-2 after three rounds. After Hulse then missed for Leeds, Kavanagh stepped up and converted the kick to send Wigan through to the next round and set up a clash at Manchester City. Tamworth - Stoke City 1-1 AET Stoke win 5-4 on penalties The dream of Conference side Tamworth ended in a penalty shoot-out against Championship side Stoke City after they drew 1-1 in a replay. Shortly after Stoke's Paul Gallagher struck the crossbar, Nathan Jackson put Tamworth into the lead on 42 minutes. After some great work by Carl Heggs, Jackson fired home to give the minnows a shock lead. Their dreams took a hit with ten minutes to play when Gallagher got one to go, firing in with an overhead strike off a corner kick to level the tie at 1-1. The penalty shoot-out was level at 4-4 at the end of regulation, sending it to sudden death. Tamworth's Michael Touhy was up first, but had his shot stopped by Steve Simonsen before Carl Hoefkens fired in the winner for Stoke. Middlesbrough - Nuneaton 5-2 After a seven-goal thrashing at the hands of Arsenal over the weekend, Middlesbrough took out their frustration on Conference North side Nuneaton at the Riverside. Chris Riggott finally put Steve McClaren's side on the scoreboard in the 34th minute with a looping shot and Yakubu doubled the lead with a penalty three minutes before the interval after Stuart Whittaker felled Gaizka Mendieta in the area. Five minutes into the second half, Stuart Parnaby made it 3-0 and Yakubu extended the lead again with his second of the night eight minutes later. Mark Viduka added a fifth for Boro in the 63rd minute before Gez Murphy added two goals, including a penalty, within the final 20 minutes. Middlesbrough advance to the fourth round for a match away to Coventry City. Walsall - Barnsley 2-0 Stoke will now host League One side Walsall after they defeated league rivals Barnsley 2-0 on Tuesday. Michael Leary put Walsall into the lead in the 68th minute and a header by Kevin James just ten minutes later cemented their spot in the next phase. Chester City - Cheltenham Town 0-1 The two League Two sides clashed for a spot in the fourth round and a home tie against Newcastle United, and the away side came through, earning a big-money tie. In the 52nd minute, Kayode Odejayi put Cheltenham in front after taking a pass from Stephen Guinan and firing beyond Stephane Gillet from inside the area. |
