CUZCO, Feb 9 (SW) - Mexican giants Chivas got a late winner from Ramón Morales as they snatched a victory over Peru's Cienciano in Copa Libertadores action on Wednesday night.
Group 1 Cienciano - Chivas Guadalajara 0-1 Despite a clear dominance in possession by Chivas from the outset, Cienciano early on looked to have taken the lead only for a goal to be disallowed for offside. After Miguel Villalta was whistled for a foul late on, Morales blasted in the resulting free kick to snatch victory and send Chivas off to a good start in the Libertadores. Group 4 Universidad Católica - Tigres 3-2 Things got interesting in Chile early on as Mexican side Tigres took the lead within the first minute as Sebastián González converted Júlio César Santos' pass, but Luis Pedro Fuenzalida pulled the Chileans level four minutes later. Jorge Quinteros got his first of the match with just seven minutes gone on the clock with a header off a free kick and he extended the lead in the 67th minute, heading in yet another free kick by Dario Conca, before Aldo de Nigris got a goal back four minutes later for Tigres. Group 6 Nacional - Pumas UNAM 2-0 Castro first struck on 16 minutes when he hit a brilliant shot from a tight angle inside the near post after a cross fell to him after a deflection. Just after the hour mark, a long throw-in into the area led to Nacional's Sebastián Vázquez being hit in the face on a challenge in mid-air, resulting in a penalty. Castrol then stepped up to the spot and wrong-footed goalkeeper Odin Patiño to seal the victory for Nacional. |
