HANNOVER, Feb 8 (SW) - Hamburg and Werder Bremen both had chances to gain ground on leaders Bayern Munich in the Bundesliga on Wednesday, but both failed to produce victories, and Hamburg were beaten away from home.

Hannover - Hamburg 2-1

Dariusz Zuraw gave Hannover the lead in the 48th minute to send the crowd into an uproar, and when Vahid Hashemian doubled their advantage on 72 minutes, it looked like another big win for surging Hannover.

Sergej Barbarez pulled a goal back for Hamburg nine minutes from time, but in the end they were condemned to their second defeat in three games.

Stuttgart - Werder Bremen 0-0

Bremen could have gone to within six points of Bayern if they were to have won at the Gottlieb-Daimler Stadion, but were forced to settle for a stalemate and a single point.

Nelson Valdez had many opportunities to snatch a win for the visitors, but manager Thomas Schaaf will be disappointed as the Paraguay international failed to convert any of them.

Bayer Leverkusen - Wolfsburg 4-0

Dimitar Berbatov gave Leverkusen the lead over Wolfsburg just one minute shy of the half-time interval, and Swiss international Tranquillo Barnetta doubled the advantage for the home side in the 55th minute.

German international Bernd Schneider's goal in the 71st minute put the game out of reach with the score at 3-0, but Ahmed Reda made it four for the home side four minutes later.

Nürnberg - Eintracht Frankfurt 0-1

Eintracht Frankfurt did well to separate themselves from the rest of the Bundesliga's potential relegation candidates on Wednesday with an away win against Nürnberg.

Ioannis Amanatidis struck the winner for Frankfurt two minutes before half-time to give the visitors their first win four matches.

Borussia Mönchengladbach - Schalke 0-0

Schalke also failed to gain ground on the top three in the league as they were held to a stalemate against Gladbach.

Schalke are five points adrift of Hamburg in third place after the point earned on Wednesday.
