ROMA, Feb 19 (SW) - AS Roma won their tenth Serie A match in a row to equal an old record, but had little reason to celebrate as captain Francesco Totti broke an ankle and faces a long spell on the sidelines.
AS Roma - Empoli 1-0 Only fifteen minutes had been played when Simone Perrotta put the home side in the lead. The goal was enough for Roma to achieve their tenth consecutive victory, with which they equal the record of three other Italian teams. The last side to have done this, was Bologna in the 1963-64 season. But the Romans suffered a major blow when a challenge by Empoli defender Richard Vanigli, which had a broken ankle as result for Totti. The captain will be out for at least two months, and may even be a question mark for the upcoming World Cup in Germany. Fiorentina - Lazio Roma 1-2 Lazio Roma took a secure lead with goals from Valon Behrami in the 32nd minute and Tommaso Rocchi in the 49th. Fiorentina got one back through Valeri Bojinov on the hour mark, but failed to score an equalizer. Chievo Verona - Palermo 0-0 Chievo Verona and Palermo held each other to a scoreless draw. Chievo, placed seventh, lose touch with European football as sixth-placed Livorno now have a four-points advantage. Sampdoria - Ascoli 1-2 Fabio Quagliarella's goal in the 56th minute was cancelled out by Sergio Volpi in the 71st, but the hosts went down to ten when Francesco Flachi was expulsed four minutes later. Ascoli took advantage and scored a decider in the 85th minute. Udinese - Siena 1-2 Rej Volpato opened the score for Siena in the 34th minute, but Vincenzo Iaquinta levelled from the penalty spot four minutes later. Volpato insisted on scoring the winning goal however, and restored Siena's lead after another minute. Former Roma winger, Frenchman Vincent Candela was sent off for the hosts in stoppage time. Lecce - Reggina 0-0 No goals were scored at Lecce versus Reggina. The visiting side is 19th in the Serie A and are seven points behind Empoli, and eight points behind Cagliari in 17th position. Treviso - Parma 0-1 Things were even worse for Treviso however, who are now alone at the bottom following a 0-1 defeat by Parma. The only goal of the match was scored by Fabio Enrico Simplicio. |
