ISTANBUL/PALERMO, Dec 13 (SW) - Fenerbahçe needed a dramatic comeback and Celta de Vigo needed to hold on late, but both advanced from UEFA Cup Group H with wins on Wednesday.
Fenerbahçe - Eintracht Frankfurt 2-2 If Frankfurt were able to grab a victory in Turkey, that would send them through at Fenerbahçe's expense and that goal seemed in reach when Naohiro Takahara put them in front in the seventh minute with a header past Volkan Demirel. It seemed even more likely that the Germans would prevail in the 52nd minute when Takahara bagged his second of the match, again using his head to put home a cross by Albert Streit. The Turks appeared to be reeling but they began a fierce rally in the 64th minute as Tuncay Sanli kept with the theme of the day, using his head to punch home Alex's cross to cut the deficit in half. Then, with seven minutes remaining on the clock, Semih Sentürk got the breakthrough that put Fenerbahçe into the next round, but he was sent off late on and will miss the first-leg of their Round of 32 tie. Palermo - Celta de Vigo 1-1 Celta, too, needed just a draw to move forward with Palermo needing a full three points, and the hosts were put up against it in the 59th minute as Fernando Baiano got a head to a cross from the left. But Palermo set up a tense finish in the 70th minute when Giovanni Tedesco got his boot to a cross by Franco Brienza, but the Sicilians would get no closer, exiting the competition despite sitting third in Serie A. Newcastle United had already clinched the first place spot in the group, and with the results, Celta manage to finish second with Fenerbahçe in third, ahead of Palermo on goal difference. |
