Lens - Sampdoria 2-1
Olivier Thomert got things off to a good start for the home side at the Stade Félix-Bollaert with a goal in the tenth minute when he scored after getting to an attempted pass to the goalkeeper by Sergio Volpi. Francesco Flachi pulled Sampdoria level in the 23rd minute, firing home after a header by Emiliano Bonazzoli, leaving the visitors in position to advance with a draw. Samp hearts were broken, though, in the first minute of second-half added time when substitute Jemaa, who came on for Aruna Dindane, fired past goalkeeper Luca Castellazzi to send Lens into a frenzy and into Friday's draw. Hertha Berlin - Steaua 0-0 Falko Götz's side secured the point they needed to get them into the next round, as the result of the other group match also worked in their favor. Around the half-hour mark, Hertha nearly went in front when Jerome Boateng fired a shot wide, and Steaua had the best chance in the 55th minute when Constantin Iacob hit a header off the post as a result of a corner kick. |
