ROTTERDAM, Dec 26 (SW) - Feyenoord defeated AZ Alkmaar on Monday to allow PSV Eindhoven to go top of the Eredivisie with their win over NEC Nijmegen.
Feyenoord - AZ Alkmaar 2-0 Patrick Paauwe put Feyenoord into the lead just three minutes into the action after he combined with Dirk Huijt to split the AZ defense. Five minutes later, Paauwe hit a pass to Jonathan de Guzman who fired home after beating two AZ defenders to make it 2-0 to the home side. AZ came close in the second half when Shota Arveladze smashed a shot against the crossbar, but in the end AZ fell to second place, level on 38 points with Feyenoord. NEC Nijmegen - PSV Eindhoven 0-2 Côte d'Ivoire international Arouna Koné put PSV into the lead just six minutes in and the match was sealed at the death when American winger DaMarcus Beasley headed home for a 2-0 victory. PSV have a three-point lead over AZ and Feyenoord with all three having played 17 of 34 games. Feyenoord and AZ also now have 11 points between themselves and fourth-placed Ajax who play on Tuesday. Utrecht - Sparta Rotterdam 1-1 Utrecht moved up to sixth place with a draw at home against struggling Sparta on Monday. Dave van den Bergh's goal in the 28th minute appeared as if it would hold up to be the winner, but Ivan Cvetkov fired in at the death to snatch a share of the spoils for Sparta. Twente - RBC Roosendaal 4-1 Twente had no problems with RBC on Monday, as they thrashed the visitors for a big win. Peter Niemeyer put Twente in front on 23 minutes before Ramon Zomer doubled the lead three minutes later. Zomer got his second of the match in the 53rd minute to extend the lead to 3-0 before Ebou Sillah got a goal back for RBC in the 64th minute. Daniel Majstorovic would restore Twente's three-goal lead in the 73rd minute and help them punctuate a dominating performance. |
